Martin
Schaeferle III, M.D. did his undergraduate work at the University
of Iowa. He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa his junior year and subsequently
graduated "with Honors." Following in the footsteps of
his father and uncle, he attended the University of Iowa College
of Medicine. He was elected into Phi Alpha Mu medical scholastic
fraternity and received his M.D. degree in 1968.
After his internship in Portland, Oregon, he served as a General
Medical Officer in the US Navy, including service in South Korea
and Viet Nam. He received the Naval Achievement Medal for his work
with Korean civilians.
Following an honorable discharge from the Navy, he completed his
education in general surgery at the University of Utah and became
certified by the American Board of Surgery. He then completed training
in plastic surgery at the University of Kansas and became certified
by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
Dr. Schaeferle has been in an active plastic surgery practice in
Tacoma, Washington, where he did both cosmetic and reconstructive
surgery for twenty years. In addition to cosmetic surgery, he has
extensive experience in acute and reconstructive burn surgery, cleft
lip and palate surgery, and traumatic reconstruction. He has been
a member of the Washington State Maxillofacial Review Board for
eighteen years and part-time director of the Firefighters Burn Center
in Tacoma, WA for the last ten years. He has participated in volunteer
surgical services through Heal the Children foundation.
Dr. Schaeferle moved to Austin, TX, in 1997 and has restricted
his practice exclusively to cosmetic surgery since that time. He
is trained in all aspects of cosmetic surgery including liposuction,
body contouring, and laser surgery.
Dr. Schaeferle is an active member of the American Society of Plastic
and Reconstructive Surgery, the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic
Surgery, and the Lipoplasty Society, as well as belonging to multiple
national and regional medical societies. He was also a member of
the American Burn Association and the American Cleft Palate Association
for twenty years.
